This teamwork game for kids in a game centered on teamwork and experimentation. The goal of the activity is to test different sized instruments to transport blocks from one side of the room to the other. Think of it as a modern twist on the egg-and-spoon race. Encourage a child to try using many different spoons and non-sharp utensils to transport their toy blocks. Talk about the hold the material has on the item. Is the block more slippery on the wooden stirring spoon than a silver spoon? Can you fit more blocks on a teaspoon or a tablespoon? How does your speed or efficiency increase when you get help from a friend? This preschool game or activity was inspired by the book Brick by Brick and we later used it with Bathe the Cat, but you can also use it anytime you’d like a fun and engaging indoor activity. It’s particularly great for a chilly day.
Here are the four steps illustrated above:
-
Place some blocks beside you and put an empty box on the other side of the room.
-
Use a teaspoon to take as many blocks as you can from your side of the room to the other side; drop the blocks in the box.
-
Try again and this time use a tablespoon, soup spoon, wooden spoon, spatula, or any other non-sharp kitchen utensil.
-
Now enlist a sibling, adult or quarantine-approved friend to help you. Have your person use another utensil or a paper or plastic bowl. Keep repeating this last step until all the blocks are in the box.
