What is dot to dot?

You might be wondering: what is dot to dot? Dot to dot or dot-to-dot is a type of drawing in which dots on a page are connected in a specific order to make a picture. The most popular connect the dots go in ascending order, usually starting with 1 and going up to 10, 20, 50, or a different number. Other dot to dots play with descending order, or even numbers — these are all numerical dot to dot worksheets. You can also find alphabet dot to dot printables. If you’re new to connecting dots, you’ll want to start with easy dot to dot printables and work your way up to hard dot to dot printables.

What does dot to dot help with?

  • Dot to dot printables help children learn and/or identify their numbers and letters. The numerical dot to dot worksheets help children with number order and with counting. Dot-to-dot games are a great way to help small children grasp concepts like even numbers or teaching to count by 5s.
  • Dot-to-dots are a fun and easy way to encourage a child to work on their hand-eye coordination. By drawing a line from one dot to another, they are improving coordination, practicing holding a pencil, and exploring the distance between spaces.
  • Connect the dots help with comprehension. The more a child draws lines, the more he or she learns that lines on paper can come together to create something. That something can be a design, a picture, or a word — but it’s coming together because of careful effort to connect one dot to another, in a specific order.

If your child likes dot-to-dots, we think they’ll like these tracing worksheets too! When a child gets to trace letters, trace lines, and trace insects (among other things) they practice how to grip a pencil, they sharpen their fine motor skills, and they have lots of good old-fashioned fun away from a screen.
