Have a fun and interesting conversation about perspective with this activity inspired by Sun and Moon Have a Tea Party. Show your child the illustrated instructions and have him or her lead the prep work. This is a great exercise for small kids to experience another person’s point of view and build empathy.
Here are the four steps illustrated above:
-
Sit in chairs facing each other, a few feet apart
-
One person says what they see from their vantage point
-
Next, the other person says what they see from their vantage point
-
Now switch seats and repeat the exercise; talk about the ways you both were right, the ways you both were wrong. Discuss how two people could see completely different things and both be correct.
Here are some book-based talking points:
-
What was your favorite part of the book? Why?
-
What are some of the things Moon usually sees happen at night?
-
What are some of the things Sun usually sees happen during the day?
-
What did Cloud suggest and why?
-
So, who was right — Moon or Sun?
-
Can two people have different points of view and both still be right?
-
Have you ever had a different point of view from someone? What was it about? What did you think? What did they think? Were you upset that you felt differently? If yes, what did you do?
-
Why was Cloud’s suggestion helpful?
-
Was there anything in this book that was confusing to you?
-
Is there anything in this book that you’d like to talk about?
