Why Trace Alphabet Letters?

Why trace alphabet letters? What’s the point? The reason to trace alphabet letter is because the mere act of tracing letters helps children practice and refine their pre-writing skillset. Tracing helps kids build their fine motor skills. And fine motor skills help build what’s to become a child’s foundation for writing letters, forming words, and drawing. Tracing also allows children to practice holding a pencil or a crayon. All these things that come naturally to an adult, take time to master for our little ones.

And also, if you think about it, many people think the best way to learn something new is to watch and then give it a go. Try it. Practice makes progress!

Rosie here. My mom is a former reporter. She told me when she first started in the newsroom as an editorial assistant it was kind of scary. She was the youngest one there and she studied TV and radio news, and there she was – writing long form copy, from scratch, for wire/print. In her free time she’d read the stories written by her much more experienced coworkers. Then one day she just decided to print one of her favorite articles of the day and typed it up, word-for-word. She started doing this whenever she had extra time. Slowly she got to feel how the flow of things came together. She tells me to practice, practice, practice and to get my muscles used to the letters.

So, I trace a lot of things. Tracing can be a lot of fun for kids. Mom says tracing helps to:

Build fine motor skills
Improve pre-writing skills
Strengthen concentration
Boost drawing skills
Increases creativity
Work on visual-spatial skills
Support self-esteem and confidence

So, grab a pencil or a crayon and get to work! If you’re not sure how to hold a pencil? Here are three quick tips on how to hold a pencil for kids.

Have fun when you trace alphabet!
