Looking for great bedtime stories for kids? We just read a few from Grandpa Bernie’s Bedtime Stories and loved them! The book, a must-read of short bedtime stories, is written by Bernard Ditchik. And yes, he is a grandpa.
The book has more than a dozen short stories or vignettes. One we particularly like is called “A Sweet Bargain.” It’s about a butterfly that gets caught in a spider’s web and makes a deal to bring the spider something tasty, in exchange for being let go. (Print this spider coloring sheet we made to go with the book to extend the fun!)
As things go, the spider warms to the butterfly and a beautiful friendship develops. Reminding little kids that kindness matters; that a deal is a deal; and that open minds lead to new and quite important life experiences.
Most of the bedtime stories in the book take about 5-minutes to read. While there is an illustration (more like clipart), at the start of each chapter, the pages are grey and bland, with a white stars along the edges. So, when I’m very tired I especially like this book because I don’t have to try to keep my eyes open to see how it ends. I can imagine it as my mom reads it. Sometimes I tell mom what I’m thinking about. Most of the time, I start over. I imagine the butterfly prefers roses over daisies. I always imagine she’s wearing blue shoes, though, because blue is my favorite color.
Some of the words I didn’t already know, like ‘bargain’ – but mom explained that it’s another way to say deal. I could tell mom really liked all the new words I was learning, and remembering.
