I really like this bilingual community book for kids called Mi Comunidad! My Community! It’s written by 123 Andrés and illustrated by Mónica Paola Rodriguez. The book has a link and code to watch a video with the words from the book that are sung by the Latin Grammy winning duo Christina and Andrés that make up 123 Andrés.
Mom and I received this bilingual book about community in exchange for a potential review. The minute I read it, I wanted to tell you all about it. We’re always looking for books that are in Spanish and English since mom and her side of the family speak Spanish fluently. This book is great for kids who want to learn more words in Spanish.
Hailed as “Rockstars for little language learners” by Billboard, 123 Andrés uses Spanish and English so parents, teachers, and caregivers can introduce their kids to members of the community that keep them safe, help them learn, and help them thrive.
I really like that the book showed people within my community that I see often. This gave mom and me many chances to practice the new words I learned. I see my teacher every day, or my maestra. Sometimes I see firetrucks on the way to school, so mom reminds me that the firefighters inside are bomberos. I surprised mom at the supermarket saying the cajera in aisle 5 was available. I’ve never seen mom so happy about the checkout line!
After the story, the book has a section where you can meet some community helpers. Mom called this a glossary and she really liked that it was written in both Spanish and English. And after that, there was a whole page with a QR code that let us do a musical story time and had ideas for activities, like writing thank you cards for your own community helpers and writing your own book about your specific community.
