Here’s a fun consent game for kids to play and practice asking for permission. It’s really red light, green light… but on yellow light, you ask the person calling the lights if it’s OK for you to move forward. If yes, proceed. If no, stay in place until the next light is called.
Above you’ll find illustrated instructions for your child to lead this water theme activity. Below is a cheat sheet on the four steps illustrated above for the adults. We came up with this activity to go with the book Let’s Talk About Body Boundaries, Consent & Respect, written by Jayneen Sanders and illustrated by Sarah Jennings.
- One person looks away and calls “green light” while facing away from friends; friends try to move closer to the person calling the lights.
- The person calling the lights yells “red light” and turns to face the friends; the friends “freeze” and hold still. If anyone is caught moving, they return to the starting point. The object is to get to where the person is calling the lights and tap him or her. Once that’s done, you become the person calling the lights.
- The person calling the lights faces the friends and calls “yellow light.”
- The friends ask if they may move forward. If the person calling the light says yes, they have given consent and therefore the friends may move forward. If the person calling the lights says no, the friends must stand still until the next light is called.
