counting goldfish activity

Looking for counting goldfish activity? Here’s a free preschool math printable inspired by the book Bunny Overboard, written and illustrated by Claudia Rueda. In the book, a bunny, well, goes overboard, and ends up swimming in the sea. Can you imagine what types of sea life the bunny might run into? We thought for sure there are goldfish in these friendly waters. So, here’s an activity where you get to roll a die and count the goldfish.

To start, print this handout and find some goldfish crackers (or anything really) to place on top of the hand drawn goldfish as you play this game. You’ll also want a die. Don’t have a die? Then print this free paper die and with your adult, cut it out and tape or glue it together!

Here’s how the goldfish game or goldfish activity works in three steps:

  1. Roll the die.
  2. Look at the number and place a goldfish cracker (or other item) on top of one of the numbers that you rolled on your die.
  3. Roll again and keep repeating until your entire paper fishbowl is filled with crackers.

After, count how many crackers are there on your paper? Add up how many of each number too? What happens if you eat one cracker? How many are left?

We found the hardest part of this preschool math worksheet to be — NOT EATING THE GOLDFISH till we were ready! Oh well, at least it was a great opportunity to practice preschool subtraction and a great worksheet for pre-k arithmetic. 😉
