Dinosaurs and the Prehistoric World is a must-read for any kid that likes dinosaurs! This book, written by Pascale Hédelin is part of the DO YOU KNOW? series, and is like a board book but for more grown up kids. By this, I mean it has a lot of things to look at and it’s organized the many fun facts into five different categories or chapters. It also has an index, quizzes, thick pages and rounded corners. I like it when my parents read it to me but I also like sitting on the couch and trying to read it myself.
I think this is one of the very best dinosaur books for preschool.
The different chapters include:
-Types of Dinosaurs
-Popular Dinosaurs
-Dinosaur Life
-Life without Dinosaurs
-More to Know (this has a timeline of dinosaurs, sizes of dinosaurs, and things like that)
Mom says this book reminds her a little bit of a set of Encyclopedias she had when she was little. She says it feels like it has a STEM-centric approach. Not really sure what that means? I wasn’t either. Mom says the book seem to be teaching little lessons that use the STEM Standards of Practice. STEM stands for Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics.
For example, in this book about dinos for kids, there is a section where I get to match the egg to its dinosaur with the help of clues, like: “Diplodocus eggs were completely round.” In another section, I’m asked to match the mouths, legs, and spikes to the right dinosaur. It was fun to imagine how silly some dinosaurs might look with mismatched parts!
I didn’t like reading this book in order. I liked to flip through and point to things and have my parents tell me what I was looking at. Usually my parents like me to read books from left to right and page by page but this time I was surprised that they both said it didn’t really matter if we skipped around. I was thrilled! The illustrations were fun and many were action shots — a dinosaur lowering its head to drink water or a Scutellosaurus escaping into a bush — so I had a lot of questions and didn’t always want to wait to hear descriptions of other things.
I’m excited! I have many friends who love dinosaurs and this book will definitely be one of those books that I gift again and again; but not my book! I’m keeping this copy Dinosaurs and the Prehistoric World for myself!
