Make your own pretend binoculars to bird watch and spot things over yonder with this easy step-by-step video tutorial. They’ll be great to use with the book Backpack Explorer: On the Nature Trail: What Will You Find?

You’ll need:

  • 2 toilet paper roll

  • 1 sheet of colored construction paper (or white paper you might choose to color)

  • Long piece of string

  • Thin strips of colored tape or more construction paper to glue on instead

  • Scissors (and your adult)

  • Glue (and your adult)

  • Stapler (and your adult)

  • Ruler

  • Pencil

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Cut the construction paper long enough to two empty toilet paper rolls and secure with glue.

  2. Glue the toilet paper tolls together using glue and let dry.

  3. Use color or decorative tape (or thin strips of paper) to add an accent to each end of the toilet paper rolls.

  4. Use the pencil to mark where you will make holes to insert the string along the outer edges of each toilet paper roll.

  5. Use scissors or a hole punch to make holes where you drew the pencil markings.

  6. Insert and secure the string to the holes, then add a dab of glue to secure the string inside each toilet paper roll.
