fashion book for kids

Here’s a fashion book for kids that will speak right to their hearts! In Matchy Matchy, written and illustrated by Erin McGill, a girl named Maria is super tired of the outfits her mom picks out for her because she always has to match. Her shoes match her lunchbox, her hair clips, and just about everything else. She’s perfectly coordinated all the time, except it doesn’t feel so perfect. Plus, her friends don’t have to match!

“I’m about to lose my matchy-matchy mind,” she says one day. She then decides that ‘s it. No more. She makes signs, she marches, she even writes a manifesto – so that everyone (and by that she means her mom) knows exactly how she feels about her matchy-matchy life. My mom loved the signs, like: Say no to sweater sets and power to the plaid. But Maria soon learns she can’t even write a manifesto without her mom matching her effort and writing her own!

So Maria chooses to hold a fashion show for her mom. She shows her how nice she looks in leopard and lace, and many cool, original, looks that don’t match at all. And guess what happens? Her mom gives not matching a try. And she looks good.

This is such a fun book. It’s fun to look at the outfits and think of the times that I match my clothes and the times that I don’t. I actually applied the idea of this book several minutes after reading it when crossing the street with mom; her name is Maria too. We were out for a stroller ride. Mom asked me if she should turn right like we normally do. And I told her to: “Mix it up, Maria!” Boy, did she laugh out loud!

I think every kid can understand what matchy matchy is all about. Whether your grown up wants you to match them, or your sibling, or your backpack. Matching with something, seems to be part of being a kid… and so does mixing things up.

I think you’re going to enjoy this book about fashion for kids.
