fireworks in a cup experiment

Here’s a FUN and SUPER INTERESTING fireworks in a cup experiment your child will love!

Above you’ll find illustrated instructions for your child to lead this Fourth of July theme activity. Here’s a cheat sheet on the four steps illustrated above for the adults. When we did this at home we had a lot of fun talking about what we thought might happen. We discussed how if we made a guess ahead of time it was called a prediction. We also talked about the steps involved, aka the process. And of course, we wrapped it all up with a conclusion. Then we did it again! We came up with this experiment to go with the book The Night Before the Fourth of July, written by Natasha Wing and illustrated by Amy Wummer. It’s a really engaging preschool experiment for ANY day though!

  1. Fill a see-through glass cup 3/4 of the way with warm water

  2. In a separate small glass bowl, child adds 4 tablespoons of vegetable oil and 4 drops of food coloring (any color food coloring; mix and match if you’d like)

  3. Slowly pour the small glass bowl with the new mixture into the tall glass of warm water

  4. Watch your fireworks!
