Looking for letter P activities for preschool? Make a piano out of paper with this DIY piano craft / letter P craft with this free template and a few supplies you probably already have lying around your house!

This easy craft for preschoolers was inspired by the book 88 Instruments, written by Chris Barton and illustrated by Lois Thomas. Haven’t read it? WHAT?! Read my review here – I think it will make you eager to test out different musical instruments and see which might be the right one for you. And whether or not you choose the piano, definitely choose to the read this book about The Bear and the Piano. It’s written and illustrated by David Litchfield and AMAZING!

But, back to how to make a piano out of paper.

You’ll need:

  • To print this piano template FREE
  • One sheet of colored construction paper (8.5″ by 11″); we used yellow
  • Glue (and your adult)
  • Scissors (and your adult)
  • Ruler (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS FOR DIY PIANO CRAFT / LETTER P CRAFT:

  1. Cut out the keyboard potion of the template. We used a ruler (see 0:50 timestamp in video) to do this more quickly. You may also use scissors if you prefer. When this is done — set aside.
  2. Line up the P part of the template so it fits well on your construction paper. Then, holding the white template on top of the construction paper, carefully cut out your P (see 1:18 timestamp in video). If your kiddos want to do this, you might want to use painter’s tape to safely secure the construction paper to the template or you could have them cut out the P, trace it onto the construction paper, and then cut out the P they drew on the construction paper.
  3. Line up the left edge of your newly cut out P with the keyboard you recently cut out. The portion of the keyboard with the bars touching the edge goes facing the left, away from the P (see 1:52 video timestamp).
  4. Cut off the sides of the keyboard that extend beyond the P on both ends (see 2:12 video timestamp).
  5. Cut out the black bars and glue onto the marked area on the template (see 3:00 video timestamp).
