This video is all about how to make a balloon card.

Whether you’re looking for balloon birthday card ideas or an easy DIY gift card, this preschool card craft is an easy way to brighten someone’s day — regardless of the occasion. The best part is, you don’t need much to get started! A piece of heavier card stock is best for the actual card part but you could also fold a piece of construction paper or even regular printer or notebook paper to begin.

This easy ballon card craft was inspired by the book The Red Balloon, written by Albert Lamorisse. Have you read the book? Check out my review here!

To make a balloon card you’ll need:

  • A piece of heavier paper if available (if not, plain white paper)
  • Various pieces of colored construction paper (don’t have that? Grab some crayons and color in white paper)
  • Pencil
  • Black pen or thin black marker (and your adult)
  • Something round to trace
  • Scissors and your adult
  • Glue and your adult
  • Small piece of ribbon

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THUMBPRINT ART INSECTS:

  1. Fold the plain white paper in half, making a firm crease along the left to make the actual card; set aside.
  2. Place your round item on a piece of colored paper and trace the shape to make a circle. Repeat for each colored balloon you’d like to make. We made six balloons — one of each colored paper we had available.
  3. Cut out the circles.
  4. Arrange the circles on your card where you’d like them to be, then glue into place.
  5. Using your pencil, lightly draw lines from each balloon toward the bottom of your card at a slant, so that the balloon lines gather somewhat into a long V-shape. (see 2:06 mark in video)
  6. Tie your ribbon into a bow (see 2:26 mark in video) and set aside.
  7. Use your black pen or thin black marker to trace the light pencil lines you made in step 5.
  8. Glue your ribbon at the spot where the ribbons come together (see 3:20 mark in video)
