This sorting by size worksheet asks kids to put the guitars in order from shortest to tallest. It’s a fun activity with a musical theme we made to go with the 88 Instruments book, written by Chris Barton, and illustrated by Louis Thomas, though this order by size worksheet free can be used at any time.
While for an adult, small and big, short and tall, come naturally… for little kids size can be a big concept that takes some practice to fully grasp. By cutting out the paper guitars and giving kids the chance to position and reposition them side by side, they are able to compare the items more closely. Sure, some children will prefer to jump right in and you can choose to discuss the sorting by size preschool handout after. Other kids, will need some guidance.
If multiple guitars seem daunting, place one beside the other and ask which is taller? Or, which is shorter? Choose the term that you think will best resonate with your preschooler. Once your child has answered, build upon it. Grab another guitar and compare it to one of the two you’ve just identified. How about this one? Is it taller? Slowly put the guitars in order to demonstrate to your child how to organize objects from shortest to tallest. We suggest you don’t glue anything if your child is still processing things. Once ready, shuffle the guitar cutouts and have your child give it a try.
Are you loving shortest to tallest? We love putting things in order around here! We often organize dolls by height. Once you’re done with the paper guitars, look around to see what you might have that’s three dimensional to further instill the concept. Do you have dinosaurs? Toy cars? Broken crayons? See what happens when you ask for items to be placed in order from tallest to shortest? It’s not as easy as it seems off the bat!
