In Sun and Moon Have a Tea Party, written by Yumi Heo, and illustrated by Naoko Stoop, Sun and Moon get into an argument about what happens when it’s their turn to be awake. One evening, as they’re sipping tea and eating cookies, Moon says moms and dads put kids to bed, the sky is dark, and the streets are empty. Sun is shocked. He insists moms and dads get their kids ready for school, the sky is bright, and the streets are busy. They sip more tea and say more things, and seem to get more and more frustrated. Then a Cirrus cloud comes to see what all the fuss is about. The cloud thinks Moon and Sun are both right and suggests they trade places. So, sleepy Sun stays awake all night and sleep Moon stays awake all day. They learn to see each other’s point of view.
This book was so much fun. It’s stilly to think that Moon and Sun would have a tea party! And what a good idea to trade places. I’d never really thought about what the Moon or the Sun see, and never thought of it at all from the sky. It was cool to see parents, kids, birds, and streets from the top, down. I felt like I was being sneaky, watching other people do things. I liked the idea that both the moon and sun could see different things and both be right. Mom and Dad just love this book. They like to talk with me about perspective and empathy and really listening to people. They say this looks like a simple book but there’s a lot to learn from it. We all think it’s plain beautiful. An amazing lesson left behind by a talented author.
