woolly mammoth book

This woolly mammoth book for kids filled a huge void in our home! It’s called How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth– and we love it! The book is written by Michelle Robinson and illustrated by Kate Hindley and it’s so very charming.

You see, out of the blue I started crying one day. Mom asked me what was making me so sad and I told her that my favorite animal didn’t exist anymore. She asked what animal, and through my sobs, I told her: “The woolly mammoth. It’s extinct.” Mom looked at me for what seemed like forever. “The woolly mammoth?” she asked. “Yes,” I told her. “It’s part of the elephant family and it’s extinct.” She looked even more surprised that I knew all that.

Well, 2-days later, a couple of books on woolly mammoths arrived along with Skylar, that’s what I named the woolly mammoth stuffed animal mom got me as a cuddly surprise 🙂

We didn’t really like the first book but the minute she read the first page of How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth, I knew I wanted to read it again and again. The book is about a girl who needs to give her pet a bath and how she figures out how to do it and shares the plan with you in step by step instructions.

For example, to get the mammoth into the bath tub, she uses a broom, a spooky mask to scare the mammoth, a skateboard, and other tactics. The ideas are super creative and the illustrations are so very funny. There’s a 2-page spread in the book with an umbrella that is my favorite. I also like that the book is a set of instructions broken down into steps. I love that step seven has many shampoo styles featuring the mammoth, like the twirly-whirly.

know no one can have a real life woolly mammoth as a pet but I really liked imagining that I could. And while the book wasn’t about facts, mom looked those up on the internet for me. This book makes me very happy. Skylar likes it a lot too.
