Yo! I say, Yes? asks Mom — and that’s how we read Chris Raschka’s Yo! Yes? together.

I love that I can ‘read’ this book almost on my own. I ask Mom a lot of questions too like: What’s wrong with that boy? Why is he looking down? Doesn’t he know that other boy wants to play with him? She tells me one boy is shy and the other is outgoing. She loves that one boy is black, the other is white, and despite their differences they end up happy together. I like the rhythm of the book and the artwork, which is made of watercolor and charcoal. Mom likes that we get to act out the story. She says for a book with such a small words, they sure do make a big impression. It surprised both of us that the whole book was only 34 words. This book was awarded the Randolph Caldecott Medal.

FREE PRINTABLE:

Punctuation Marks — Print and cut out the question mark, exclamation point, and period from the free punctuation marks printable then glue them onto a popsicle stick (or tape them to a pen).

As you re-read Yo! Yes? hold up the punctuation mark you see in the book. Notice what’s happening in the book as the punctuation changes. Listen to how your adult changes the tone of their voice as they read.

Have you noticed that when someone asks a question they use a question (?) mark? Did you notice that when the word is loud with a burst of energy an exclamation (!) mark is used? How about when it’s a normal tone — did you notice the period (.)?

Punctuation is the name for the marks we use in writing. It’s important we use the right punctuation so that the person reading the book can clearly understand the message.
