learn to write words

Help kids learn to write words with this fun and free writing printable that gets their minds thinking about different words and sounds.

Start by showing them that each horizontal row will spell one words. To spell the word, kids need to look at the object and identify what letter that thing starts with. So, for the sailboat, a child would write the letter S underneath the sailboat, then move to the next item on the right and so forth until they get to the last object/letter. The letters under each object should correctly spell the illustration on the far right.

We love writing in our house. When Rosie gets stuck, I’ll sometimes say, it uses the same first letter as sun and she’ll write an s. Sometimes I’ll say things like, it’s the same vowel that we use to spell sun (she gets stuck on the letter u sometimes), or it ends with the same letter as sun. I’m not a teacher but I like getting her to think her way to her answer.

This writing words worksheet can be used with any book. We thought the sun tied in nicely with this Earth Day book.

Also, if you’re looking for ways to practice writing specific letters, you’re in luck! We’ve made free letter tracing and letter practice printables for the whole alphabet, complete the form below to have all 26-pages emailed to you in one PDF booklet. And this one was all Rosie’s idea: tracing the whole alphabet on one page.

Here’s are some other writing printables you may love:

Trace the word swim

Trace the ocean letters

I hope you have as much fun as we did as you learn to write words!
